S.A.L.T. Patrol

Seniors and Lawmen Together (S.A.L.T.) is a dedicated group of volunteers that has been patrolling the trails of the Iowa Great Lakes region from April through October since 1996. Their mission is simple but impactful: to assist the sheriff’s department as the “eyes and ears” on the trails, provide friendly assistance to walkers, joggers, bikers, and other users, and report any issues that could affect safety.

During a typical summer, the S.A.L.T. team logs more than 10,000 miles monitoring trail activity. Each volunteer is trained and certified to operate the ATVs and is equipped with a cell phone and radio to report emergencies or concerns to the Communications Center. They also communicate maintenance needs such as fallen branches or pavement issues to the DCTB Executive Director.

Beyond safety, S.A.L.T. volunteers enhance the trail experience by removing trash and debris, offering directions and assistance, providing water, and even rewarding young riders with ice cream certificates for wearing helmets. Their dedication makes a meaningful difference in the community, and their service is deeply appreciated.
