October Trail Talk

We have had some amazing weather to get out and enjoy the Dickinson County Trails.  We continue to see many people out walking and biking while we appreciate the cooler temperatures and fall’s abundant beauty in the Iowa Great Lakes!

TRAIL PROJECTS CONTINUE

New Bridge

NEW BRIDGE NEAR PLAC:  A new bridge replaced a decaying and damaged bridge north of the Pearson Lakes Art Center at the end of September just in time for the fall trail events that were approaching.  This project is the beginning of trail reconstruction and development in the area that will continue next spring.

TATONKA SKA TRACE BRIDGES & CULVERTS: Contractors continue to work on rehabilitating the railroad trestle bridges and culverts so they are ready for trail construction.  The first bridge west of Montgomery had its concrete deck surface placed last week. This project to preserve 4 bridges and 9 culverts along the old railroad bed will continue through the winter and wrap in the spring.

CITY OF OKOBOJI PROJECT:  Work continues on Gordon Drive in Okoboji and the trestle bridge is still closed at the north end by Mau Marine.  The south end of the bridge will be closed in the near future to replace rough pavement and correct the drop off at the bridge approach.  The project is providing much needed trail improvements in this area.

SPINE TRAIL MAINTENANCE: Construction crews will be onsite later in the week or early next to begin work on stabilizing the bank and replace nearly 200 feet of trail pavement near Nature Trails in Milford.  This project will close the trail between 202nd Street and 210th Street for approximately 2-3 weeks. Notification of trail closures will be sent out on our website, Facebook and DickinsonA!ert.  Sign up to get alerts from the Dickinson County Trails Board delivered to your cell phone via text message by texting DCTRAILS to 69310 or visit www.dcem.us .

In closing, we would like to thank the Iowa Great Lakes Chamber, Pearson Lakes Art Center, Bedell Family YMCA and the Dickinson County Nature Center for hosting  great fall events on the Iowa Great Lakes trails. The Oktoberfest Ride, Mutt Strut and Family Glow Walk/Run are a highlight as the summer season winds down.

Until next time, as always, Happy Trails to you and yours.
